Guernsey Honored for Restoration of Lawton Courthouse

05.17.2002

OKLAHOMA CITY – C.H. Guernsey & Company will receive a State Historic Preservation Office Citation of Merit from the Oklahoma Historical Society in a ceremony in Durant, Okla. The firm is being honored for its design of the restoration of the exterior of the US Federal Courthouse located in Lawton, Okla.

GUERNSEY was charged with designing the restoration of the outside of the courthouse to its original 1917 appearance. As a result of deferred maintenance, the initial site survey of the building revealed the original wood windows to be in poor condition. GUERNSEY consulted with the State Historic Preservation Office and determined the following course of action:

  • Replace the first floor windows with replicated wood windows with clear insulated glazing.
  • Rehabilitate the three courtroom windows on the east side of the building to improve thermal performance.
  • Replace the second and third floor rectangular windows with replicated wood windows with clear insulated glazing.
  • Replace the non-historic aluminum entry doors with replications of the original wood doors.

The second and third floor windows and doors were replaced with replicas of the originals. The new windows also replicated the original sightlines and frame profiles. A paint analysis was done to determine the original color of the windows, so the outside of the new windows could be painted in the original off-white color.

A non-historic loading dock was demolished to open back up an original pair of doors and three additional historic windows.

The cost of the restoration project was $540,000.
