Guernsey Wins International Design Award

OKLAHOMA CITY – The U.S. Air Force presented C. H. Guernsey & Company a facility design, Honor Award at the 2004 U.S. Air Force Design and Construction Awards program on July 29 in Washington, D.C.
GUERNSEY’s design involvement with the fitness center at Little Rock Air Force Base (AFB), Ark. helped secure the international-level award, as well as three national-level awards in 2003.
Little Rock AFB, Ark. Physical Fitness Center salient facts:
- 62,650 square feet
- $7.2 million facility
- New fitness center replaces 50-year-old, 28,150 square feet facility
- Dubbed “Jewel on the Hill”
- Facility received four awards
- 2000 Concept Award
- 2004 Air Education and Training Command Facility Design Award

According to James Pfeifer, Little Rock Corps of Engineers project manager, the facility is considered the lightning rod, center piece of the Little Rock AFB, and promotes the U.S. Military’s quality of life goal.
"The new facility drastically increased the use of the facility by military personnel and their families. It improves the physical condition of our men and women in the Air Force. It is a quality and functional building, which promotes a well rounded individual,” said Pfeifer.
“Built-in seating and towers provide human scale to large complex,” said the judging committee.
Fitness Center Amenities:
- 330 Lockers
- 16 Showers
- Fitness equipment
- Laundry facilities
- Free weights, aerobic, cardiovascular and family fitness areas
- Four Racquetball courts
- Basketball court
- Second floor indoor running track
- Four Administrative offices
- Health and Wellness Office with support area

Pfeifer also stated the facility has become the model for other military installations.
“Other branches of the military services have toured the facility, and received planning documents for review for their new facilities,” said Pfeifer.
GUERNSEY also designed supporting facilities within the fitness center:
- Heating ventilating air conditioning
- Utilities
- Fire protection
- Alarm systems
- Pre-wiring for communications
- Sidewalks
- 300 parking spaces
- Landscaping
- Overall site improvements
- Antiterrorism Force Protection (set back requirements)
