Guernsey Employees Win Honorable Mention in OKC Bus Stop Competition
12.06.2005
OKLAHOMA CITY – Bernie Colbert and Shawn Lorg, employees of C. H. Guernsey & Company (Guernsey), recently entered the Metro Transit’s Bus Stop design competition sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Central Oklahoma Chapter. Their design was recognized for its innovative use of materials.
The challenge of the competition was to create a bus stop area design that would be appropriate for all locations in a 640 square mile area, ranging from downtown urban settings to sites adjacent to the roadway according to the OKSAC.org Web site. Lorg and Colbert’s design included 100% recycled, pre-finished aluminum. Additionally, L.E.D. lighting fixtures were used in lieu of traditional lighting to conserve energy, lamp life and reduce heat emissions.
The design is also made to be modular. “We wanted to maintain a universal look at each site, while maintaining maximum flexibility based on available funds,” said Colbert. Glazing and pre-finished screens can be arranged to optimize the comfort of waiting passengers.
“We wanted our entry to add additional elements of architectural design within Oklahoma. We wanted to promote modern art in our city that would be appreciated by residents and visitors alike,” said Lorg of their efforts. Their design features the combination of rigid linearity and seamless curvature derived from the lines and shapes of the buses themselves, as well as the roads and routes they travel upon.
