Guernsey Wins Regional Planning Award
04.04.2007
OKLAHOMA CITY – C. H. Guernsey & Company Landscape Architect Kelly Coffman, ASLA has been selected to receive a Central States of the American Society of Landscape Architects’ (ASLA) ‘Award of Excellence.’
Coffman’s recent work with Waste Connections, Inc. of Colorado brought about the award. Guernsey was retained to help with planning and long-term use development of the landfill in the southwest quadrant of Oklahoma City. The project also included evaluating contextual issues along the adjacent North Canadian River corridor. The landfill, scheduled to close by 2013, had been the subject of some concern by the community.
The plans prepared by Guernsey address land use, environmental concerns, community connectivity, phased implementation, long-term maintenance and public use opportunities for the landfill and a seven-mile stretch of the river. Once closed, the landfill property plans will serve as an open space park and be a prime example of the positive re-use and restoration of an intensively used property near the center of Oklahoma City. Development of the proposed open space park will include trails, wetlands and a Council Ring featuring panoramic views of the City from the top of the 130’ landform.
The Central States ASLA Awards recognize achievement in five categories, and this project was selected for the Planning and Analysis ‘Award of Excellence.’ The Central States include Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Oklahoma. There were 42 submittals, and the ‘Award of Excellence’ – the highest award level possible – is not always given.
“The North Canadian River Corridor has tremendous potential, and the landfill open space park will provide a major public use area along the corridor. I’m pleased that we were able to work with shareholders, our client and the City to develop this vision,” said Coffman. “Receiving the award is just icing on the cake.”
