Oklahoma Firm Provides Electric Cooperatives With Cyber Security Handbook
06.28.2007
OKLAHOMA CITY –- C. H. Guernsey & Company (Guernsey) a national engineering, architecture and consulting firm headquartered in Oklahoma City and Digital Enterprise Security Associates (DESA) of Tulsa are helping provide greater security to rural electric cooperatives across the nation. Working together, the two firms will provide the Cooperative Research Network (CRN) with a Cyber Security E-Handbook.
The Cyber Security project involves developing a handbook for distribution to cooperatives across the United States. This additional reference will aid cooperative staff in protecting our nation’s electric power supply. The report applies the concept that any security system is only as strong as its weakest link. “Electric power service is information technology intensive, and requires a high level of security awareness,” said Randy Nason, PE, Vice President of security consulting at Guernsey. “Even seemingly innocuous actions could potentially compromise a system.” This handbook aims provide the fundamental knowledge necessary to prevent such situations.
The Cooperative Research Network (CRN) is a service of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), a service organization representing the national interests of cooperatives and their members. Rural electric cooperatives provide electric power to 40 million Americans, covering three quarters of America’s landmass. CRN assists cooperatives by evaluating and applying technologies to improve their value, productivity and services to members.
GUERNSEY’s experience working with the electric cooperative community dates back more than 70 years, having provided consulting services to more than 200 cooperatives just in the last 15 years. These services include security analysis, electric transmission/distribution system design, analytical support for rate analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and similar management support. Additionally, Guernsey has previously worked with CRN to provide comprehensive guide standards addressing threat assessment, vulnerability analysis, risk assessment, restoration and recovery.
