06.08.2009
BURLINGAME – The Air Force recently unveiled its new, $15.5 million, 51,000-square-foot consolidated fitness center at Vandenberg AFB. ECC and its teaming partners, RMA Land Construction, Inc. and C. H. Guernsey & Company, designed and built the state-of-the-art center to include contemporary technologies, modern architecture, and environmentally friendly features.
Manjiv S. Vohra, PE, ECC’s President and CEO attended the ribbon cutting ceremony. He comments, “Health and wellness of the uniformed and civilian members of the military are key, and it is a great privilege for us to be able to provide the Air Force with a state-of-the-art facility in which to train.”
The 51,000-square-foot fitness center includes three NCAA-sized basketball courts, three volleyball courts, two massage rooms, four saunas, a juice bar, shower and locker facilities, administration offices, and a 9,000-square-foot cardio and free weight area.
ECC’s Project Manager for the project, Gary Dodson, stated “Our Team has incorporated LEED-certifiable standards and Phase II-ready features into the center’s design. This creates a more sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly structure, which will translate to lower operation and maintenance costs for the Air Force and a higher quality product for its end-users.”
ECC’s Team worked closely throughout the design-build phase with both AFCEE and the base personnel. Led by ECC, RMA Land Construction, Inc. served as General Contractor on the project and C. H. Guernsey & Company provided A&E design, support, and quality assurance. “From the beginning, this team was truly a team,” states Mr. Dodson, “communicating, making decisions, and meeting goals for the end users’ benefit.”
LEED, or the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council as a nationally accepted benchmark for the design-build and operation of sustainable buildings. The ECC Team used the LEED Green Building Rating System™ as guidance to ensure a sustainable, innovative, and high-quality product for the Air Force.
