Background: Hangar B1030 was originally constructed in 1958 with offices and shop lean-tos on each side of this general maintenance hangar. In 1966, the hangar bay was expanded in each direction to accommodate larger aircraft. As part of the 1966 expansion, the existing fire protection system was upgraded to the current five deluge system zones. A 2000 design project upgraded the lean-to areas to meet current needs, but did not address the water deluge suppression system in the hangar bay.
Program: Tinker AFB and the Air Force Reserve determined that the water deluge suppression system should be upgraded to current criteria (ETL 98-8). GUERNSEY was selected for the design of the new system.
Design: The design of this project included an extensive survey of the existing water deluge suppression system. The major design elements included replacement of all existing deluge valves and trim, replacement of all existing actuators and the replacement of all actuating panels.
The design of this project was interfaced with a previous design. This effort included making recommendations on ways the current construction contractor’s work could be modified so the two projects, when completed, would meet the overall objectives of upgrading Hangar B1030 with the least total cost to the Government.
