A prominent Midwest refinery utilizes a proprietary process to remove heat stable salts from the amine used in their desulphurization processes. The resulting waste material is a spent caustic stream. Disposal of this stream in the refinery sewer system was resulting in the generation of significant quantities of RCRA hazardous solids. The refinery contracted GUERNSEY to evaluate the system and identify an economically attractive alternative for disposal of the spent caustic stream.
GUERNSEY engineers identified a number of alternatives for managing the spent caustic stream. A cost benefit analysis was completed, and a detailed process design was completed for the best alternative.
GUERNSEY developed a detailed process design for the new system, including pump and tank specifications, piping specifications, piping and instrumentation diagrams, material balances and utility summaries. Once installed, this design will result in reduced waste disposal costs of over $100,000/year.
