A large Midwest refinery recognized a need to provide improved procedures and training for their wastewater treatment system operators. GUERNSEY was chosen to evaluate operator training needs and to develop the program.
The refinery anticipated significant future growth. This improved training program was implemented as one way of ensuring that the treatment system performed up to its full potential so that future treatment requirements could be met.
In developing this improved program, GUERNSEY completed three tasks:
- New, updated standard operating procedures were developed for each process in the wastewater treatment system. GUERNSEY provided technical expertise and oversight to refinery operators as they wrote the improved procedures.
- GUERNSEY developed 10 customized computer-based training modules for refinery operations. These modules were designed to familiarize operators with the key concepts and principles associated with gravity oil / water separation, dissolved air flotation, equalization and diversion, activated sludge units, aerated lagoons and wastewater laws and regulations.
- GUERNSEY conducted face-to-face training sessions with the refinery operators. These sessions focused on the operation of the refinery wastewater treatment processes, with an emphasis on day-to-day operations as well as dealing with upset scenarios.
