Cost Estimating
GUERNSEY cost control procedures begin with conceptual design and continue throughout all phases of the project. Throughout the design phase, we will work with you to ensure that cost and value decisions adhere to design guides and user needs. Over the past ten years, GUERNSEY estimators have recorded an average accuracy of 1.01% of the base bid amount.
From the first day of conceptual design, GUERNSEY’s cost estimating department is involved with the design team to start building the costing data for each project. These early conceptual estimates are critical to the success of the project and allow the client to begin pursuing funding and financing for their project. The estimates, which are produced using Costlinks, MCACES and Excel, also allow the design team and client to determine if the project is economically feasible. Lastly, the conceptual cost estimate is used to keep the project in budget and to make critical decisions so our clients get the most out of each project. At each phase of the project the conceptual cost estimate is updated to ensure that budgetary issues are addressed.
The GUERNSEY cost estimating department uses several methods to provide accurate estimates. One method is to spend time with contractors to learn what materials, based on geography, have incurred cost fluctuations and to what extent. We also perform cost comparisons after bids are received to determine what areas need to be adjusted for future cost estimates. The final method is simply comparing the information from all available databases. They range from Means to multiple Department of Defense provided programs to information provided by general contractors.
