Dams, Reservoirs & Flood Control

Dam, Reservoir, Flood ControlMany flood control facilities have been in service for more than fifty years. Over this time, deterioration of the structure and increased downstream development become evident. Piped spillways show corrosion or other structural failure. Vegetation, particularly trees, weakens embankment integrity. Secondary spillways frequently are cut by deep erosion rills. Construction of residences immediately downstream from a dam may necessitate an increase in the dam’s hazard classification.

New reservoirs and flood control facilities are needed for a variety of reasons. In some areas, additional upstream development has increased flooding and resulted in potential damages. Reservoirs can provide much needed benefit to an area, including a new water supply source and recreational opportunities.

GEURNSEY provides a number of services related to dams, reservoirs and flood control:

  • Watershed yield studies
  • Reservoir routing
  • Dam overtopping studies
  • Hydraulic analysis
  • Dam stability analysis
  • Designs for new and renovated reservoirs
  • Detention basin and pond plans
