Every public entity faces a need for improvements to their infrastructure. In some locations, this need is being driven by population growth and the effects of increased urbanization. Channels no longer handle the increased run-off from upstream developments. Water systems no longer provide service without severe pressure drops or rationing. Sewer systems overflow due to increased load and small diameter pipes.
Existing infrastructure components, such as dams, storm drains, water lines and sewers, are often well past their design lives, and in effect are serving on borrowed time. Even if the demands placed on an infrastructure system have not increased, the age and condition of each component may have resulted in a considerable decrease in capacity. Some components, such as dams, may even pose an increased threat to human life due to deterioration. Other components, such as sewer pipes, may pose an ecological hazard. As more and more infrastructure components pass their original design lives, improvements or replacement must be planned.
GUERNSEY’s roots can be traced to providing civil engineering services to governmental and private clients for a wide variety of public works and infrastructure improvements. Today, the firm still serves this group of clients, but with a matured spectrum of capabilities. Our assignments include dams and reservoirs, various other flood control projects, water and wastewater projects, electric power systems, resource conservation, environmental surveys and investigations, land development and government building programs.
