Railroads & Bridges
Railroads
In many areas, railroad infrastructure was established long before other types of transportation facilities were constructed. This existing infrastructure needs to be accommodated when designing improvements to highways and streets. Additionally, many commercial and governmental facilities rely on railroads for transportation needs.
GUERNSEY has been responsible for planning and design of railroad grade separation on several highway/street projects. At other locations, we have designed the upgrade of an existing at-grade crossing to improve safety. This has involved complex intersection geometrics and coordinated signal systems.
Bridges
Many of the most critically needed infrastructure improvements are bridge locations. Each bridge, whether it is on a highway, county road or city street, has a designated safe load limit. Often, this limit is less than the legal weight limit for trucks using the highway, road or street. When this occurs, the bridge must be “load-posted” to restrict the loads that impact the structural system of the bridge. Other bridges are functionally obsolete, often with inadequate horizontal and vertical clearance.
GUERNSEY provides a wide variety of services for the design of new and replacement bridges. These include:
- Feasibility studies
- Planning and environmental assessments
- Hydrology and hydraulic design
- Structural design
- Right-of-way research and acquisition
- Detour and phasing plans
